Step 4- Change Workgroup settings manually- Step-by-Step networking with Windows XP

We've mentioned that Windows XP comes with a handy Home Networking Wizard, which can help you set up all the computers on your network. If you'd prefer to use the Wizard, rather than adjusting your settings manually, go ahead and jump ahead to the Step 6. Keep in mind, though, that it's not difficult to set up your computers on your own.

First, you want to make sure your computer has a name and description.

  1. From the Start menu (or your desktop if My Computer appears there), right-click My Computer and choose Properties

  2. Click the Computer Name tab
  3. Enter a computer description. This can be anything you want that helps you identify the machine. You might include the machine's operating system, if you use more than one.

  4. To enter a new name for the computer, click the Change button

  5. The Computer Name Changes dialog box opens. In the appropriate box, enter the computer's name. Use something straightforward or creative?your choice.

You also need to establish a workgroup name. When you view the computers connected to your network, they'll be grouped by workgroup. All the computers on your network should have the same workgroup name.

Enter a workgroup name - You can use different workgroup names, if you have a reason to, such as if you maintain several networks in your home. However, this will cause your computers to be grouped separately when you view them in My Network Places.

Once you've established your computer and workgroup name, you can move onto the real business of starting a network, sharing files and printers
