For a free antimalware and antivirus app that also runs in your system's background, AntiVir works surprisingly well. Combining the antimalware with the antivirus is a luxury in a free virus scanner. After testing on several machines no viruses turned up, although several malicious hidden files did rear their heads. Initial concerns about the real-time Guard protection hamstringing system performance proved groundless. Although we could shut off AntiVir and its Guard, there was no way to remove the icon from the system tray or stop the occasional ad placement by Avira. The Complete Scan is no longer numbingly slow, but it will pauses midscan to let you know when it's found a threat. That's good for killing nasties, but it also means that the scans needs baby-sitting.

AVG Free Edition is the well-known free virus scanner tool. AVG Free is available free of charge to home users for the life of the product. AVG Free offers very good (and very free) protection against viruses and spyware. As a bonus, its real-time LinkScanner technology keeps you from clicking search links to dangerous sites. It's an excellent choice if you need free protection against both viruses and spyware.
As before, AVG Anti-Virus 8.0 is based on the same core AV technology as the retail version but minus a few bells and whistles, so it is to all intents and purposes the same as the retail product. Which makes it a pretty good AV choice, even ignoring the great price tag.
So what don't you get for your no money? Well, no support for a start, though the support offered by AVG Technologies for paid editions is limited to online only, so maybe this is no great loss.
AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0 is just an AV product and not an internet security bundle so you won't find a firewall or antispam module, though, as before, the package integrates with your email client to stop mail-borne malware.
However, AVG Anti-Virus 8.0 does include the new LinkScanner feature, this marks dodgy sites returned by a search engine hunt.
